One critical marketing mistake I made in business

If I could go back in time and fix one critical mistake I’ve made in business, it would be to start building my brand early. 

As a marketing specialist, when business owners come to me for advice, I often tell them to start building their brand early. However, I often hear responses like, “I need the money/time to do this or that, I will work on marketing at a later stage.” This begs the question, why are they asking for marketing advice if they are not willing to invest in building their brand?

Even as a marketing specialist, it took me years to fully understand the compounding power of personal brand building. Each year, the social media marketing landscape becomes more complicated and organic reach drops.

Gone are the days when simply posting cute photos of your pet or making “quote posts” could easily get you followers on platforms like Instagram. Trial and error also takes time, as there is no magic formula that works for every business. You need to test different platforms and content formats to see what engages your target clients.

More importantly, trust takes time to build. The longer your audience sees you posting regularly on a platform, the more trust they have in you. This trust cannot be bought with massive paid advertisements when “my business has grown and I have the ad budget.”

If you don’t start building your brand now, you’ll enter a vicious cycle of not having visibility, not building trust with your audience, not growing your client base, and ultimately not growing your business.

Start working on your brand now, no matter how small your budget or time allocation may be. Even if it means dedicating just one hour per week or NT1000 per month, do it consistently. You will definitely feel the compounding power of time in brand building.
